A few days ago the energy ministers of G8 and their colleagues from India, China and South Korea discussed the situation over the growing fuel prices in the world and made public the scenarios and strategies to 2050 by the International Energy Agency. In this document the IEA recommends the governments of all countries to develop renewable energy sources and nuclear energy, to save energy and to reduce CO2 emissions.
IEA’s recommendations to develop nuclear energy are quite sensible.
By increasing the share of nuclear power plants in the global power production we can reduce the share of power plants in the total greenhouse gas emission. The growing energy consumption and the steadily rising oil and gas prices have urged many countries to use safe and ecologically clean nuclear energy.
The whole world is already talking about this, including the presidents of Russia and the United States. Particularly, during the meeting of the G8 energy ministers our minister Sergey Shmatko said that Russia was planning to intensively develop nuclear energy. We have already adopted a relevant program and are firmly resolved to carry it out.
IEA says that, if the world governments continue their present practices, the CO2 emission will grow by 130%, while the oil consumption by 70%. For Russia the admissible level of greenhouse gas emission for 2008–2012 is 100% of the level of 1990 (for the EU – 92%, Japan – 94%, the United States – 93%).
