On June 26 the Expert Council for Legislative Support of the Nuclear Industry of the Energy Committee of the State Duma considered draft law on treatment of radioactive waste.
Our nuclear industry has very ambitious plans: to build 26 new nuclear reactors by 2020. Large-scale NPP construction has become a priority of our energy strategy. However, there are a number of old problems that are hindering our pace. Until recently we have had no law regulating the problem of radioactive waste treatment. Now we have such a law and it will become the key elements for guaranteeing the safety of the use of nuclear energy.
Unlike fragmentary mentions in some legislative acts, this law shows a very complex approach to the problem of radioactive waste treatment in all sectors of the economy. The state is proclaimed to be exclusively responsible for this sphere. But the best thing about this law is that it gives top priority to the protection of the life and health of people, the present and future generations, biological resources and the environment.
