Natalia Komarova, Chairwoman of State Duma Committee on Natural Resources, Nature Management and Environment Protection

– This law gives top priority to the protection of human life and health

The law regulating treatment of radioactive waste must become a key element of nuclear power engineering as it directly concerns the safety of the use of nuclear energy. This document shows a complex approach to radioactive waste treatment relations in all sectors of the economy.

I think that the key guarantor of the safety of the use of nuclear energy must become a single state radioactive waste treatment system. The law will make the state supremely responsible for the safety of the treatment of radioactive waste, will differentiate the duties of producers of radioactive waste and organizations specializing in their treatment and will determine the state regulator and the national operators in the field.

The most important thing is that the law gives top priority to the protection of the life and health of people, the present and future generations, biological resources and the environment and provides strong guarantees against radiation-related ecological disasters.
