The State Duma has ratified a bill on the adoption of the Amendment to the Convention on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material specifying the basic principles of physical protection of nuclear facilities and nuclear materials. The practical implementation of these principles will help to work out standards of safety of nuclear facilities and to strengthen international cooperation in the field of control over transportation of nuclear materials.
The adoption of the amendment will help to improve the systems, complexes and means of physical protection of nuclear facilities, nuclear materials and radioactive matters.
The amendment is supposed to improve the mechanism of cooperation among the signatories to the Convention in ensuring the physical protection of nuclear materials, in preventing the stealing of nuclear materials and actions against nuclear facilities and in eliminating the negative consequences of such actions.
The amendment adopted by the State Duma meets the interests of Russia, particularly, in developing its nuclear power industry, combating nuclear terrorism and integrating into the international nuclear community.
