Nuclear energy should be developed on the basis of three fundamental principles: nonproliferation of nuclear weapons, nuclear safety and safety of nuclear facilities, says the statement adopted by the G8 leaders during the last summit in Toyako, Hokkaido, Japan.
This statement shows that the leading world powers have a consolidated position concerning the prospects of development of nuclear energy. This confirms the correctness of Russia’s policy in the field. Of course, we lost some time in the 1990s. But today we have no alternative to nuclear energy – it is the safest for the climate. At the same time, we must give top priority to the problems of nuclear safety.
The statement points out that more and more countries are showing interest in nuclear programs as a tool to prevent climate change and to ensure energy security. And this is a sufficiently strong ground for Russia to develop its industry. I am sure that the amount of our contracts will grow. So, we must make active efforts to develop our power equipment construction industry. We have quite good prospects and we will actively expand into the world market.
Russia was one of the authors of the initiative for the use of nuclear energy based on the principles of nonproliferation, safety and nuclear security. We have long realized that this is the only way to develop nuclear power engineering.
