– The Amendment will allow creating one more echelon for ensuring global nuclear safety

On July 11 the Federation Council will consider the Amendment to the Convention on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material approved by the State Duma on July 2.

The Amendment will allow creating one more echelon for ensuring global nuclear safety. It fully meets Russia’s interests in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The Amendment enlarges the scope of action of the Convention in the field of storage, use and transportation of nuclear materials inside the territories of the signatory-states. It also offers a specific mechanism of interaction against stealing of nuclear materials or sabotage of nuclear facilities.

The key point of the Amendment is the ban on the use of any political motives for evading responsibility for physical protection of nuclear materials.
