Sergey Adamchik, deputy chief of Federal Service for Ecological, Technological and Nuclear Supervision

– We need firm legislative basis for international cooperation

On July 11 the Federation Council of the Russian Federation ratified the law “On the Adoption of the Amendment to the Convention on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material.”

Russia needs this Convention and the amendments to it. We must guarantee nuclear safety and the amendments to the Convention will help us in the matter. We need a firm legislative basis for international cooperation in working out effective measures for physical protection of nuclear material.

The Amendment fully meets Russia’s interests, particularly, in the field of combat against terrorism. During the last conference of the signatories to the Convention of Nuclear Safety in Vienna in Apr 2008, Russia’s partners (64 countries) said that Russia fully complied with the Convention. Besides, quite recently, a group of IAEA experts inspected Balakovo Nuclear Power Plant (Saratov region) and pointed out the high efficiency and safety of the plant.
