The most heated disputes and debates over the project to build a floating NPP in Severodvinsk have already passed. They were held as far back as 2001–2002, says the deputy of the Municipal Council of Severodvinsk Alexander Grishin.
So, it makes no sense speaking about discussing the feasibility or non-feasibility of the project now, in 2006. On Mar 21, 2002, after parliamentary and public discussions, the Municipal Council of Severodvinsk decided to install a floating NPP in the territory of the town. This decision was later approved by the Arkhangelsk Regional Assembly. This project will give profit to the whole region, not mentioning the Sevmash plant in Severodvinsk and new employment opportunities. Besides, this is a good chance to start the production and export of desalinating plants. The economic profit of the project is obvious for all. A floating NPP in Severodvinsk will put an end to the heat and electricity supply monopoly of the Arkhangelsk Generating Company and Arkhenergo. As a result, heat and electricity will get cheaper, says Grishin.
To remind, the project of floating NPP in Severodvinsk was launched this summer. The cost of the project is almost 9.1bln RUR. The plant is to be built by 2010. As far as Rosatom knows, in the near future there will be high demand for such plants in many Russian regions and foreign countries.
