— Nuclear power sector can and must be the locomotive of the economic development of the region and the whole country

«The construction of the 4th unit of Kalinin NPP is underway: there is a contract with Rosatom and it is being strictly fulfilled,» the governor of the Tver region Dmitry Zelenin said after the meeting of the Union of Nuclear Territories and Enterprises held in Moscow on Dec 20.

Zelenin is sure that Rosatom’s conditions will be fulfilled and the territory — the region and the municipality — will do their best to fulfill the plan in time.

«Besides, the investments made in the nuclear power sector promotes the development of the whole region and other industries. The nuclear power sector can and must be the locomotive of the economic development of the region and the whole country,» Zelenin said.

The construction of the 3rd and 4th units of KNPP was started in 1984 and suspended in Apr 1991. On Oct 22 2002 the Nuclear Energy Minister of Russia and the Governor of the Tver region signed a declaration on resuming the construction of the 4th unit.

«The relevant decision was passed in Feb 2006. The unit is to be launched in 2010.»

One of the novelties of the project is the application of a reactor system that can serve for 60 years. The basic equipment will serve for 40 years.
