— By 2050 there should be no less than 2,000 GW of nuclear capacities in the world

The state should pay special attention to the problems of young specialists in the nuclear power industry, particularly, to the problem of their housing. This can be done on a credit basis – the main thing is to keep specialists in the sphere and to ensure potential for a long-term scientific growth.

Today, we are faced with a task to ensure the development of the nuclear power sector. We have adopted the Federal Target Program “Development of the Nuclear Power Sector of Russia in 2007–2010 and till 2015.”

The key problem is how to provide this program with a necessary human and technical basis. In the last 20 years the nuclear power industry has seriously changed and, unfortunately, there has been almost no inflow of young specialists in the sphere.

I think that today we need to recruit young people in the sphere so we can implement our plans. As regards the plans of reforms, I am sure that the formation of Atomprom will stimulate the development of the nuclear power industry in Russia.

Today, we have significantly reduced the brain drain from the nuclear power industry to other spheres, particularly, to financial institutions, banks and abroad. In our institute, 1,000 of 5,000 employees are candidates or doctors of sciences, we have 16 academics. However, in order to fulfill our tasks we have yet to do much to develop science and technology.

For effective development, by 2050 the nuclear power industry will need no less than 2,000 GW of nuclear capacities (today it has 300 GW) and by 2100 no less than 5,000 GW. For attaining such a scale we should ensure the active construction of fast breeder plutonium reactors.

We should also start producing hydrogen motor fuel. For this purpose, our NPP should start producing hydrogen. According to our estimates, half of the above-mentioned 5,000 GW of nuclear capacities should be used for generating hydrogen.

In order to fulfill all these tasks both in Russia and abroad, we need active state-level efforts for providing the industry with scientific-technical potential.
