Head of the Administration of Desnogorsk (satellite-town of Smolensk NPP) Mikhail Khobotov has commented to journalists on the key results of the past year for the Russian nuclear power complex:
The achievement of the past year is that, due to the position of the President of the Russian Federation, the attitude towards nuclear power engineering has changed. NPP construction has become a priority in the development of the country’s energy system. Much has been done to usher Russia back into the world market of nuclear technologies.
I would like to point out the prospects for new nuclear capacities construction. The Government has drafted and approved Federal Target Program «Development of Nuclear Power Complex of Russia in 2007–2010 and till 2015.» Under this program, Russia will build 2 GW nuclear power units a year to have over 33 GW by 2015. 4 replacement units will be built at Smolensk NPP under the same program. This project is to be launched in 2012.
In fact, this year has given a start to the Program: the active construction of the 4th BN-800 unit of Beloyarsk NPP, the installation of a reactor at the 2nd unit of Volgodon NPP, the start of the construction of the 4th unit of Kalinin NPP, the start of the construction of the first floating NPP at Sevmash (Arkhangelsk region).
