Sergey Baranovsky, President of Russian Red Cross

— As an ecologist, I am ready to applaud to Rosatom management

I have very positive opinion of what Rosatom has done in the last two years under the management of Sergey Kiriyenko. One of the key achievements is the adoption of the federal target program for the development of the nuclear industry of Russia in 2007–2010 and -2015 stipulating large-scale construction of nuclear power plants.

As an ecologist, I would like to point out the establishment of Rosatom Public Council and its successful work. One of its crucial decisions was the resettlement of the residents of the village of Muslumovo (Techa cascade, Chelyabinsk region). Before Kiriyenko nobody cared for those people. Kiriyenko has got things moving and has found an optimal solution to this problem. As an ecologist, I am ready to applaud to Kiriyenko and his team for all they have done in this direction.

First of all, they have established a powerful state corporation. This corporation will certainly help us to solve our ecological problems. The dialogue that is actively developing between the public and Rosatom is already giving fruits.

This year we have adopted the road map of NPP construction. From the very beginning, Kiriyenko said that nuclear power plants will be built only in the regions whose governments and populations want to have nuclear power plants. In such regions Rosatom has carried out serious preparatory work and they are ready to implement the program. Let’s hope that the program will be successfully realized.

As regards the establishment of an international uranium enrichment center in Angarsk, I would like to note that not all ecologists support this project. Some of them say that the center may have a negative effect on Lake Baikal. They are wrong and we must explain to people that they are wrong. In any case, the project is underway and I think that the center will become an effective structure.

Already today we are running short of energy. So, we need to develop ecologically friendly nuclear power production. Simultaneously, we should develop renewable sources of energy.

To remind, President of Russia Vladimir Putin is going to appoint Sergey Kiriyenko as head of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation as he believes that Kiriyenko is the best candidate for the post of the head of the corporation.
