Rafael Arutiunian, first deputy director of Nuclear Safety Institute

– In the last 6–7 years Belarus has been seriously considering the possibility of NPP construction

Since the Soviet times Belarus has had an institute of nuclear energy.

Today, the problem of energy is looming large and many countries have begun taking measures to solve it. They are beginning to realize that they should diversify energy sources in order to avoid dependence on gas and oil and to obtain more stable sources of fuel. Nuclear power plant is a stable source of energy.

And it is certainly safer than any other types of power plants.

Belarus is beginning to realize that it needs to ensure its energy security, especially in industry. So, lets not be emotional and subjective and lets take a realistic approach to this problem.

I see no obstacles to the development of large-scale development of Russian-Byelorussian cooperation in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy. I think that this is quite possible and such cooperation will benefit both sides.
