Sergey Baranovsky, President of Russian Green Cross

– The appointment of Sergey Shmatko as Energy Minister proves that our nuclear power industry has achieved really big results in implementing big energy projects

The appointment of Sergey Shmatko, the ex deputy director of Atomenergoprom OJSC, as Energy Minister of Russia proves that our nuclear power industry has achieved really big results in implementing big energy projects in Russia and abroad. The appointment of a “nuclear” man shows that the nuclear power industry will enjoy priority in the energy sector.

I think that it was a right decision but I would like to emphasize that nuclear power engineering must be developed on the basis of other principles and technologies. Coal fueled plants are very hazardous for the environment as they emit lots of radioactive elements. Burning gas for producing electricity is not a very profitable business as gas can be used with more profit in other sectors of the industry. Of course, we must develop alternative energy sources but we must also develop nuclear energy. It is Russia’s trump in the world.

Under Sergey Shmatko, Atomstroyexport showed impressive efficiency in implementing big international contracts. I wish the new minister success in his new office.
