Vladimir Kiselyov, deputy director of Safety Analysis Center of Nuclear Safety Institute

– Russia is demonstrating the competitiveness of its nuclear technologies

Atomstroyexport is going to take part in the tender for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Morocco. That country wants to have two reactors with a capacity of 600–1,000MW each.

Today, more and more countries are showing interest in nuclear energy, first of all, because nuclear power plants emit no CO2 and do not change the climate. The second reason is that nuclear power plants are profitable, efficient, reliable and safe. This is very important especially now that the oil and gas prices are steadily growing.

This nuclear renaissance will certainly benefit Russia as our country has huge experience and most advanced technologies in this sphere. I think that for the moment nuclear power plant is the most profitable and economical sources of energy.

And it is certainly the safest. We have significantly enhanced the safety of our nuclear power plants. We are spending big money on safety and can be sure that we will have no problems with NPPs. We will certainly continue this work. As far as radiation is concerned, I can say that coal fueled plants produce much more radiation than NPPs.

Nuclear energy is a high-tech sector and we have very good technologies here. Today, we all see that our nuclear industry is working well. We are actively building nuclear reactors and have even more projects in mind. Atomstroyexport has won the right to build a nuclear power plant in Eastern Europe (Belene NPP in Bulgaria) and is building reactors in China and India. This all proves that Russia’s nuclear technologies are highly competitive and we can confidently bid for projects in different countries, like we are going to do Morocco, and can get them like we did in Bulgaria.
