Putin calls out to reform nuclear industry

11.05.2006 // Press-center of nuclear power industry

The President of Russia V.V.Putin paid special attention to the development of nuclear industry, while delivering an annual address to the Federal Assembly on 10 May 2006.

Talking about accelerated technological renewal of energy branch, the head of the state remarked, that «it is necessary to perform all the obligations for supplying the demand of internal development and our traditional partners? demand with energy».

«Nowadays there is a need to develop nuclear industry — an industry based on safe reactors of new generation. The positions of Russia should be strengthened at world markets of nuclear machinery engineering with the help of our knowledge, skills, new technologies and, of course, international cooperation. The problem should be solved through the restructuring of the whole branch. And, of course special attention should be paid to the promising directions of energy industry development — hydrogenous and thermonuclear», — emphasized V. V. Putin.

The head of Federal agency of the development of nuclear energy (Rosatom), Sergey Kirienko, while commenting the words of the President of Russian Federation, remarked that «it was the first time when such an attention was paid to the development of nuclear energy industry in an annual address to the Federal Assembly».

«It is important that it is the first time, when, the President of Russian Federation has formulated the aim of industry restructuring. We have already prepared a relevant program of restructuring and by the end of May it will be directed to the State Duma. Restructuring is a mean to reach the aims defined by the President. The minimum task is to keep the share of nuclear electrical energy production at 16%, which we have today and to increase the output to 22% by 2020» — said S. Kirienko.

«This will demand the construction of two energy units in Russia annually and to get a deserving role in world market of nuclear energy production». The head of Rosatom also paid special attention to the words of the President about the necessity of unhampered entering the world market of nuclear energy. However, S. Kirienko emphasized that «Russian nuclear industry doesn?t need the exclusive rights, but we will try to cancel any limitation of western countries for our exporters».
