Kiriyenko: Too low tariffs prevent nuclear power sector development

13.12.2006 // RBC

Head of Rosatom Sergey Kiriyenko believes that too low tariffs prevent the development of Russia’s nuclear power industry

During a press-conference after his speech in the State Duma, Kiriyenko noted that presently the nuclear power tariffs in Russia are twice as low as the electricity ones. “Nuclear energy is one of the cheapest in our country,” Kiriyenko said and pointed out that too low tariffs may lead to a situation when there will be no money for environment protection.

Kiriyenko believes that the tariffs should be balanced. One should not raise them sharply as they are an important social factor and their rise will affect the population. “We should be very careful in our actions,” Kiriyenko noted. He expressed support for the government’s decision to set energy tariff limits for several years ahead.
