Those supporting the construction of new NPPs say: «NPPs are ecologically safer than TPPs, WPPs and other power-generating facilities.» «NPPs produce the cheapest energy; at least, for the time being. Wind power plants are yet an exotica in Russia.» «In the West NPPs are prevalent, while in Russia they produce only 12% of electricity.» «Nuclear power engineering is really indispensable under present energy consumption rates.» «Mineral resources are not endless: oil and gas will end some day.» «Future belongs to nuclear power engineering, like it or not.»
Some of them say: «It’s time to stop fearing Chernobyl. Simply, we must always keep it mind and start building high-quality NPPs.»
Meanwhile, 28% of Russians object to NPP construction and suggest developing water, solar and wind power engineering.
27% cannot give a clear answer to the question: «On the one hand, this is new jobs and bigger profits, but, on the other, this is a constant danger.» «We must be more economical in using our natural reserves.» «It makes absolutely no difference what I think, they will build them all the same: we have to keep them in Europe warm, don’t we?»
A total of 1,800 economically active people over 18 were questioned Oct 6–16 2006.
