During its enlarged meeting, today, Jan 24, the State Duma Committee on Energy, Transport and Communication will discuss the problem of completion of the 5th unit of Kursk NPP
Attending the meeting will be representatives of the Kursk regional administration, Industry and Energy Ministry, Economic Development Ministry, RAO UES as well as Director General of Rosenergoatom Sergey Obozov.
They in the Committee say that the sides will consider what to do with the 5th unit of Kursk NPP, which is 70% ready.
The full capacity of the unit is to be 1,000 MW. The construction was started in 1986. The completion of the project requires some 19.522bln RUR and 5.9bln RUR more for electric network construction.
RAO UES and the Federal Tariff Service of Russia object to the project. As a result, the site has not been included in the federal target program for the nuclear power complex development in 2007–2010 and till 2015.
However, the Committee believes that the launch of the unit by 2011 is essential for the stable energy supply of Central Russia, where experts forecast impending energy crisis.
