IAEA approves new radiation danger sign

16.02.2007 // Iaea.org

IAEA has approved a new radiation danger sign

It is a red triangle with a scull and crossed bones, a running man and the symbol of radiation. The sign will be put on radioactive equipment, reports IAEA.

IAEA expert Carolyn Mac Kenzie says that the sign has been approved by both IAEA and International Organization for Standardization.

The sign is supposed to warn about the potential danger of radiation sources. The black and yellow symbols used so far are too abstract. They look like an electric ventilator and convey no message to the looker-on.

IAEA hopes that the new sign will be accepted by governments and businessmen and will allow to reduce the number of radiation accidents. The sign has been designed by 11 countries under a joint five-year project.
