Russian Government and OECD Nuclear Energy Agency sign joint declaration

21.03.2007 // Press service of Rostekhnadzor

During a meeting in Moscow today the Russian Government and the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development signed a joint declaration on cooperation in peaceful use of nuclear energy

The declaration will promote the further development of the Russian nuclear power industry and will provide Russia with the status of permanent observer at all the committees of the Agency.

The Agency comprises 28 countries.

The declaration was signed by the head of the Federal Service for Ecological, Technological and Nuclear Control Konstantin Pulikovsky and the director general of the Agency Luis Echavarri.

During the ceremony Pulikovsky said that the expectations of a quick nuclear energy growth in some countries and the enlargement of the geography of NPP construction imply the strengthening of international cooperation in the sphere.

The key tasks of the Agency are the study of the long-term aspects of the peaceful use of nuclear energy in the context of sustainable development, the analysis of the technical aspects of nuclear and radiation safety, applied research, exchange of experience and information in the sphere of nuclear and radiation safety. The Agency is a kind of a database of the experience and knowledge of experts from the world leading nuclear powers.

On the other hand, Russia is a country that has been actively using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes for already 50 years. I think that the cooperation between Russia and OECD NEA will promote experimental and theoretical studies, industrial developments, information and experience exchange, innovative and safety projects.

We regard our cooperation with the Agency as an opportunity to take part in projects that are important for Russia and will support the activities of IAEA.

I would like to note that the signing of the declaration is not the beginning of our cooperation. We have long been actively cooperating with the Agency under research and other projects. We are actively involved in the work of the Agency’s  technical committees. Today’s declaration is just one more positive stage in the general development of Russia’s cooperation with OECD.»
