Two floating NPPs may be built in Chukotka by 2019

Rosenergoatom Concern is ready to launch two floating NPPs in Chukotka by 2019, the director general of the concern Sergey Obozov said during the conference on the Chukotka’s development strategy held in Anadyr on Apr 3.

Obozov said that, presently, the concern is considering the possibility of prolonging the life of Bilibino NPP for 15 years. By 2012 the concern is ready to launch the first floating NPP in the town of Pevek and by 2019 the second one. The plants will replace the capacities of Chaun TPP, which will have been decommissioned by that time.

As was reported earlier, the idea to build floating NPPs as a small-capacity source of energy was first raised in the 1990s. When in 2006 Rosenergoatom announced plans to build over 10 floating NPPs in the regions, Chukotka was named as one of the potential hosts. During his visit to Anadyr in Aug 2006 the head of Rosatom Sergey Kriyenko presented several scenarios, one of them being the prolongation of the life of Bilibino NPP and the simultaneous launch of a floating NPP in Pevek. The pilot floating NPP project is presently being implemented in Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk region.
