Luis Echavarri: I have the most positive impression of Leningrad NPP
On May 29 2007 the head of the Federal Service for Ecological, Technological and Nuclear Control of Russia (Rostekhnadzor) Konstantin Pulikovsky and the director general of OECD NEA Luis Echavarri met with the management of Leningrad NPP.
“Today, Mr. Echavarri is the guest of Rostekhnadzor and Rosatom as his Agency is engaged in regulatory and supervisory activities in all directions of the nuclear fuel cycle and nuclear power engineering,” Pulikovsky said.
Before the visit, on Mar 21 2007, Pulikovsky and Echavarri signed a declaration on cooperation between the Russian Government and the Nuclear Energy Agency in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
“This declaration will allow Russia to take part in all of our key activities, with priority to be given to safety,” Echavarri said.
“We have long cooperated with the NEA on improving control over nuclear power engineering. And now that we have a declaration in hand we will be able to cooperate more effectively,” Pulikovsky said.
The visit to LNPP was part of this cooperation. The guests have visited the 2nd unit and have seen that its additional safety systems meet the highest Russian and international standards.
While commenting on the visit, Pulikovsky said: “We have seen a lot at the plant and have got comprehensive information about the work of its units and safety systems.”
During the visit the sides spoke not only about the past and the present of the plant but also about its future. Echavarri noted that the future of LNPP depends on the efficiency of its safety systems.
He noted that he had visited lots of NPPs in many countries and LNPP had left the most positive impression on him.
