Sergey Kiriyenko: Cooperation with Australia on the peaceful use of nuclear energy is one of Russia’s priorities

On May 30, 2007, the head of the Federal Agency for Nuclear Energy Sergey Kiriyenko met with the director general of the Australian Safeguards and Non-proliferation Office John Carlson and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Australia to Russia Robert Tyson.

The sides discussed their cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Kiriyenko said that the cooperation with Australia in this sphere is one of Russia’s priorities. Particularly, Russia is interested in importing Australian uranium. It is quite possible that Australia will decide to develop its nuclear power engineering, and this will, certainly, enlarge the scope of the Russian-Australian cooperation.

To this end, the sides need to draft a new inter-governmental agreement on the peaceful use on nuclear energy as the existing one was signed in 1990 and does not comply with the present level of the Russian-Australian cooperation. During the meeting Kiriyenko and Carlson discussed the details of the new agreement, which is expected to be signed in Sept 2007.
