Rosatom will prospect uranium in the south of Armenia

30.05.2007 // REGNUM

Armenian President: Jointly with Rosatom, we will shortly start prospecting uranium in the south of Armenia

During a meeting of the Nuclear Safety Council on May 30, President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan said that Armenia, jointly with Rosatom, will shortly start prospecting uranium in its southern provinces.

Kocharyan noted that Armenia is not going to enrich uranium in its territory. “We prefer to join the IAEA-controlled international uranium enrichment centers. We already have relevant agreement with Russia.”

To remind, during his last visit to Yerevan the head of Rosatom Sergey Kiriyenko said that Armenia might have some 60,000 tons of uranium. The domestic demand will probably make up some 400 tons. Armenia is going to enrich the extracted uranium at the International Nuclear Center in Angarsk. The founders of the Center are Russia and Kazakhstan.
