Rosenergoatom may build second floating NPP in Primorye

04.06.2007 // Press service of Rosenergoatom

Rosenergoatom may build the second floating NPP near Russky island (Primorsky region)

During a press conference today the deputy director general of Rosenergoatom-the director of the Directorate for Floating NPP Projects Sergey Krysov said: “If we decide to build a floating NPP near Russky island by the APEC Summit 2012 in Vladivostok, we will place it there in 2011.”

Krysov noted that no such decision has been made, so far. So, it is very much possible that the second floating NPP will be built in Pevek (Chukotka).

Presently, Rosenergoatom is carrying out preliminary work on floating NPP projects in Russia and abroad.

Such projects are an absolute novelty but they are based on long-tested technologies.

“The nuclear reactors of our icebreakers and submarines have operated flawlessly for as many as 7,000 reactor/years. Our KLT-40C reactor has already been tested and licensed. Presently, such a reactor operates at “Sevmorput” light carrier.”

“Furthermore, we have improved the reactor: we have reduced its uranium content from 46% to 20%. This is IAEA’s requirement. And we will apply this novelty to our first floating NPP.”

The lifespan of a floating NPP ranges from 38 to 40 years and can be prolonged for as much. The plant is refueled each 12 years.

The key feature of KLT-40C is its maneuverability. “It is a very maneuverable reactor and can be compared with the reactors of TPPs.”

Krysov informed the journalists that on June 5–9 a Rosenergoatom delegation is going to Cabo Verde (Africa) to discuss the possibility of supplying a floating NPP to that country. Similar negotiations are being held with 20 countries. Floating NPP is attractive for many countries as it can not only produce electricity and heat but also desalinate 6,000–8,000 c m of sea water a day (in the future this figure will be increased to 30,000–40,000 c m a day).

Presently, Rosenergoatom is building the first floating NPP at Sevmash FSUE. It will placed in Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk region. The construction is supposed to be finished in May 2010.
