4,000 tons of Australian uranium a year

Sergey Kiriyenko: Russia is ready to process 4,000 tons of Australian uranium a year

Today Russia and Australia signed an inter-governmental agreement for cooperation in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy. According to the agreement, Australia is ready to supply  Russia with, at least, AUD 1,000,000,000’s worth of uranium a year.  “The possible contracts we are negotiating now are about 4,000 tons of uranium a year, which is not far from 1,000,000,000 Australian dollars,” says the head of Rosatom Sergey Kiriyenko.

He says that the agreement will give Russia as much uranium as it wants. This will make the country independent from any specific supplier and will enhance its competitiveness on the world nuclear market. This deal will strongly enhance our uranium enrichment potential.

The previous Russian-Australian agreement was signed in 1990 and stipulated that the Australian uranium supplied to Russia be enriched for third countries only.
