Russia returns its highly enriched fuel from research reactor in Vietnam

17.09.2007 // Press service of the Federal Agency for Nuclear Energy

Russia has returned 3.9 kg of fresh highly enriched uranium from Da Lat research reactor

On Sept 15 2007 Russia returned 3.9 kg of fresh highly enriched nuclear fuel (36% enriched uranium-235) from Da Lat research center in Vietnam.

The fuel was returned by the Federal Agency for Nuclear Energy with the support of IAEA in the framework of the Bratislava agreements between the Russian and US presidents. The agreements say that Russia and the United States should return the highly enriched fuel they have supplied to third states for research. Since 2002 the sides have returned over 500 kg of highly enriched uranium.

The fuel will be processed into low enriched uranium.

At the same time, Da Lat reactor has received low enriched fuel produced by Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant.

The fuel was supplied and loaded on Sept 12 2007.
