By 2011 Rosatom will invest over 11bln RUR in construction of first part of dry spent nuclear fuel storage facility at Mining Chemical Combine

By 2011 the Federal Agency for Nuclear Energy will invest over 11bln RUR in the construction of the first part of the facility for dry storage of spent nuclear fuel at Mining Chemical Combine (MCC)(Zheleznogorsk, Krasnoyarsk region). “In the coming three years we are planning to spend over 11bln RUR and in 2010 to launch the first part of the facility,” the deputy head of Rosatom Andrey Malyshev said during a press-conference in St.Petersburg on Tuesday.

The first part of the facility will be able to store 8,000 tons of spent nuclear fuel. The total capacity of the facility is 36,000 tons. The total cost of the project (to be finished in 2016) is 34bln RUR. In 2008 the project will receive over 5bln RUR. “Now the construction is well underway, we are already building the walls and the roof,” Malyshev said.

He said that Rosatom was also planning to enlarge MCC’s «wet» SNF storage facility from 5,000 to 8,000 tons.
