The final round of the annual labor protection contest among Rosenergoatom NPPs took place at Volgodonsk NPP on Nov 14–15 2007

Representatives of Rosenergoatom Concern, the Association of Manufacturers of Individual Protection Means, the Department for Control over the Execution of Labor and Protection Legislation, Rosatom’s Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department, the Research Institute of Labor Protection and Ecology, the Federal Medical-Biological Agency, VNIIAES, the Institute of Bio-Physics, Atomtrudresursi and local authorities met at Volgodonsk NPP on Nov 14–15 2007 to discuss problems of labor and labor protection and to conduct the final round of the labor protection contest among the Rosenergoatom nuclear power plants.

In the meantime, Nordtext, Taboservice, Navigator, Tekhnoavia, Chaykovsky Textile companies organized an exhibition of their products – individual protection means.

While opening the conference the deputy chief engineer of Volgodonsk NPP Kuzhelyov said that in the Don region they were used to begin each event with a prayer. The primate of the Volgodonsk district Father Sergiy blessed the conferees.

The finalists – the best from each plant – showed their knowledge of the labor protection rules and standards and their practical skills in the following activities:

— operating cargo lifting systems;
— using instruments and devices;
— operating electric equipment;
— operating, repairing and testing equipment;
— working at high altitude;
— carrying out welding operations.

The contests consisted of three stages: test with 67 questions by VNIAES; detection and classification of violations in a picture; and a crossword. 

On the second day the contenders took part in a business game.

They showed their ability to work in a team. They answered questions asked by their colleagues from Russian NPPs and won 6:2. Engineers from Smolensk NPP and Volgodonsk NPP and Sergey Kutergin and Yevgeny Orekhov got special prizes for their questions.

Valery Felde from Balakovo NPP won the contest. Vladimir Usatenko from Beloyarsk NPP was the second, Vladimir Shevchenko from Kursk NPP – the third.

All the contenders got prizes from Rosenergoatom and producers of individual protection means. Director of Volgodonsk NPP A.Palamarchuk received a letter of gratitude from the acting director general of Rosenergoatom Concern for excellent organization and high efficiency in the field of labor protection.

The contest has been conducted every year since 2005 under the chairmanship of the general inspector of Rosenergoatom Concern Erik Pozdyshev.

The objective of the contest is to improve NPP personnel’s knowledge of the labor protection rules, to reveal and disseminate the best experience in the sphere, to encourage NPP personnel to work safely, to intensify injury and professional disease prevention measures, to reduce on-site injury rate.
