IAEA seminar on capacity factor enhancement conducted at Kola NPP

An IAEA seminar on enhancement of NPP capacity factor was conducted at Kola NPP Nov 13–15 2007. The seminar was part of a new series of Rosenergoatom-IAEA technical cooperation programs.

The IAEA group was led by Frantisek Hesoucky from IAEA and comprises experts from Olkiluoto NPP (Finland), Paks NPP (Hungary), the Central Office of Rosenergoatom Concern and Russian nuclear power plants.

The Finnish and Hungarian experts shared their experience on how to enhance an NPP’s output and to optimize its performance. The conferees discussed such problems as maintenance and repair of equipment, introduction of information systems for effective control of maintenance, influence of electricity prices on NPPs’ operation schedules.

While summing up the results of the seminar, Hesoucky said: “We have met to compare our experience with the international one. Our colleagues from Kola NPP say that such seminars are important for them in terms of exchange of experience. The results of such meetings can well be used at other NPPs of Russia.”

International Atomic Energy Agency is an international inter-governmental organization set up for executing tasks related to the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Rosenergoatom and IAEA cooperate in several directions: technical support programs, national and regional projects, off-budget programs, regular program.

As of Nov 7 2007 the capacity factor of Rosenergoatom Concern made up 76.3%. Rosenergoatom has ten nuclear power plants with 31 reactors operating at a total capacity of 23,242MW.

In Oct 2007 the capacity factor of Kola NPP made up 77.49%.
