2nd International Scientific-Technical Conference “Development of Nuclear Industry on the Basis of Closed Fuel Cycle of Fast Breeder Reactors” has set off in Moscow

The 2nd International Scientific-Technical Conference “Development of Nuclear Industry on the Basis of Closed Fuel Cycle of Fast Breeder Reactors” set off in Moscow on Nov 28.

Over 200 Russian and foreign specialists, particularly, representatives of Rosatom, Rosenergoatom Concern, Russian Academy of Sciences, are taking part in the conference.

While opening the conference Acting Director General of Rosenergoatom Concern Alexander Lokshin reads out the address of Head of Rosatom Sergey Kiriyenko to the conferees. In his message, Kiriyenko pointed out that the development of innovative technologies on the basis of commercial fast-breeder reactors will solve the problem of energy supply for a long-term prospect.

Lokshin added that this direction requires active international cooperation.

The foreign experts pointed out that Russia has all technological and research capacities for active introduction of fast-breeder reactors in the nearby future. An expert from L’Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire (IRSN) said that fast-breeder reactors will help NPPs to use natural resources 50 times more effectively and to reduce the amount of radioactive waste.

Deputy Director General-Director for New Technological Platform of Rosenergoatom Oleg Sarayev said that in 2012 Russia is going to launch a new fast-breeder reactor – BN-800. The reactor is being built at Beloyarsk NPP.

Almost 6.8bln RUR has been allocated for this unique project in the last 1.5 years with 12bln RUR to be assigned in 2008. The BN-800 project is part of the federal target program for the development of the nuclear power industry of Russia in 2007–2010 and -2015. The project is financed by the Government, which proves its importance. This is the biggest industrial project in Russia for the moment.

Sarayev expressed hope that the conference will become a tradition, an important and fruitful forum for both local and foreign specialists.

The conference will last till Nov 29.
