Rosatom and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited sign memorandum of mutual understanding for cooperation in the field of peaceful use of nuclear technologies

29.11.2007 // Press service of Federal Agency for Nuclear Energy

Rosatom and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited have signed a memorandum of mutual understanding for cooperation in the field of peaceful use of nuclear technologies

During the working visit of Russian Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov to Canada, the head of the Federal Agency for Nuclear Energy (Rosatom) Sergey Kitiyenko signed a memorandum of mutual understanding with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited for cooperation in the field of peaceful use of nuclear technologies.

During the visit Atomredmetzoloto OJSC (Atomenergoprom’s leading uranium miner in Russia and abroad) and Cameco Corporation (Canada) signed an agreement for establishing joint ventures for uranium prospecting and mining in Russia and Canada.

The agreement is a logical follow-up on the memorandums of mutual understanding signed earlier by Techsnabexport OJSC (100% subsidiary of Atomenergoprom) and Cameco Corporation. Now that Russia’s uranium mining assets have been placed under the control of Atomredmetzoloto the company acts as Techsnabexport’s successor in the field.

The Russian-Canadian JVs are supposed to prospect and mine uranium in the territories of Russia and Canada, particularly, in North-Western Russia and provinces of Saskatchevan and Nunavut.

Kiriyenko also met with representatives of the Ministry of International Trade of Canada, Cameco Corporation and AECL. The sides discussed the prospects of bilateral cooperation in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy and technologies.
