Rosatom is drafting law on treatment of radioactive waste in Russia

Rosatom is drafting a law on treatment of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel in the Russian Federation, the deputy head of Rosatom Tatiana Yelfimova said during a conference in Moscow on Dec 18.

She said that the law stipulates the establishment of a special fund for financing the decommissioning of nuclear power units. But before creating such a fund, it is necessary to prepare a long-term schedule of decommissioning, to obtain necessary funds for this process and to ensure the liquidity of the fund’s money as the fund is supposed to act for 40 years and more. Yelfimova said that Rosatom has already opened a special account in the Central Bank in the framework of this project.
