Dec 24 Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics hosted an inter-department conference on 25th anniversary of Russian program for scientific-technical support of IAEA Safeguards
The conference was attended by representatives of IAEA, Rosatom, the ministries of foreign affairs and defense of Russia, Federal Tariff Service, Radon, Kurchatov Institute and other companies involved in the program, offering new promising projects and related to the nonproliferation regime or the investigation of incidents of illegal use of nuclear materials. The conferees discussed the key results and the prospects of the program.
The director of ITEP B.Sharkov welcomed the audience. The deputy head of Rosatom’s International and Foreign Economic Cooperation Department A.Zhgutov opened the meeting. He told the conferees about Rosatom’s efforts to strengthen the IAEA Safeguards.
The director of the Micro-Particle Analysis Laboratory V.Stebelkov and the head of the laboratory of V.G.Khlopin Radium Institute Y.Panteleyev made reports on the work done to improve one of the key mechanisms of the safeguards – the method of selection and analysis of environmental samples. The head of the Information Resource Department of TsNIIATOMINFORM FSUE V.Kupriyanov reported about the processing of data collected from different mass media.
The head of the Diode Laser Spectroscopy Department of ITEP A.Nadezhdinsky, the chief engineer of the Heavy-Water Reactor of ITEP Y.Volkov, the deputy director of the Institute of International Relations of Moscow Engineering Physics Institute A.Koldobsky and professor of MEPhI V.Romodanov told the conference about the most interesting and promising directions of the program.
The director of IAEA Department N.Khlebnikov and the head of the department’s working group V.Ryzhikov pointed out the importance of the program for IAEA. However, they said that Russia’s contribution to the nonproliferation regime was not equivalent to its scientific potential and capacities and offered a number of new project Russian research companies could implement under the program.
In conclusion, Zhgutov pointed out the importance of such conferences for understanding of technical problems of nonproliferation and for their effective resolution.
