Belene NPP to make Bulgaria leading exporter of electricity in Europe

17.01.2008 // Prime Tass

Vladimir Putin: Belene NPP will make Bulgaria one of the leading electricity exporters in Europe after 2010

Belene Nuclear Power Plant, the biggest NPP construction project in Europe, launched in Nov 2006 and carried out with the participation of Russian Atomstroyexport, is the best example of the efficiency of Russian-Bulgarian cooperation in the energy sector, Russian President Vladimir Putin says in an article published in the Bulgarian mass media. Putin is sure that the project will make Bulgaria one of the leading electricity exporters in Europe.

Stable energy supply is becoming increasingly important for progress. “Today, we are considering ways to diversity energy supply routes, to introduce new insurance schemes and to share the financial risks of our partners. The projects like Burgas-Alexandroupolis and Southern Flow fully meet the national interests of Russia and its European partners, including Bulgaria. Just like the North European gas pipeline, they will enhance the energy security of Europe, stimulate business and create new jobs,” says Putin.

“Today, the priority of our countries is to create conditions for steady improvement of the lives of our people. We believe that our pragmatism comes from life and contributes to the strengthening of regional partnership in the economic sector. Our bilateral partnership fits well into the all-European cooperation. And the big energy projects launched in the last year have proved that,” says Putin.

He says that the Black Sea region has always been an area of common interests. “We are ready to cooperate with all parties ready for cooperation. This approach is the basis of our position at BSEC and BLACKSEAFOR. Today, we are faced with a number of urgent tasks – from economic growth to care for the ecological system of the Black Sea and preservation of the unique cultural legacy of that region. And we are all responsible for stability and welfare in our common region.”
