The United States sets up working group for studying the possibility of extending the lives of its reactors

The US has set up a working group for studying the possibility of extending the lives of its reactors from 60 to 80 years

The group has been set up on the basis of the Idaho National Laboratory with President of the Nuclear Energy Institute Frank Bowman appointed as chairman.

The key task of the group is to study the possibility of extending the lives of nuclear reactors from 60 to 80 years. The group is supposed to study problems related to fatigue of metals, wear and tear of cable networks, destruction of concrete structures. $10mln has been allocated for the studies till 2009.

To remind, over 70 reactors in the US have already been granted licenses for extending their lives from 40 to 60 years.
