Directors of EBRD have visited Chernobyl NPP

On May 20 2008 a delegation of directors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), led by EBRD President Jean Lemierre and Emergency Minister of Ukraine Vladimir Shandr, visited Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

The key point of the visit was the Shelter Stabilization Project. The guests watched a film about the stages of the project carried out by Russian-Ukrainian Stabilization Consortium led by Atomstroyexport CJSC. The stabilization work on the Shelter facility was finished in late 2006.

The director of Chernobyl NPP Igor Gramotkin introduced the head of Atomstroyexport’s representation in Ukraine Vitaly Dragunov and the director general of Yuzhteploenergomontazh company (Ukraine) Andrey Stalnoy. He said: “These are the people who have ensured the high-level organization and implementation of the project in line with the radiation safety rules of Ukraine.”

The guests complimented the Consortium for its work. IAEA Representative Particio O’Donnel said that the Consortium had done fantastic job and had made true a really futuristic project.

Presently, Atomstroyexport CJSC is carrying out physical work under Shelter Implementation Project 07–1–00 contract.

The contract was signed with Chernobyl NPP specialized enterprise on Jan 10 2008.

The contract envisages the repair of the roof and the physical protection systems and the reinforcement of the supporting beams.

The project is supposed to enhance the safety of the Shelter facility until a new safe confinement is built.

This time the Stabilization Consortium comprises YUTEM-Engineering and Atomenergopstroyproekt (both from Ukraine).

On Apr 20 2008 the consortium successfully completed the basic stage of the project. Due to effective management, original technologies and modern equipment, the consortium completed the work one month ahead of the schedule.

The state acceptance committee will examine the work in late 2008.

The Shelter Stabilization contract was concluded in 2004 in the framework of Shelter Implementation Plan, a project financed by Chernobyl Shelter Fund managed by EBRD.

Atomstroyexport CJSC is the leading Russian organization implementing government contracts for the construction of nuclear power plants abroad. After the launch of Tianwan NPP in China, the company continues building Kudankulam NPP in India, Bushehr NPP in Iran and Belene NPP in Bulgaria.
