The joint committee on the Inter-Regional Department for Control of Hydraulic Works of the Inter-Regional Territorial Department of Rostekhnadzor for Central Federal District, the Chief Department of the Emergency Ministry for Kursk region and Rosenergoatom Concern says that the cooling pond of the 5th and 6th units of Kursk Nuclear Power Plant (“Kurchatov Sea-2”) is ready for being filled with water.
The Committee has inspected the pond, its dams and pump stations and has found out that they comply with the safety standards and the pond is ready for use.
The positive resolution of the Committee is the first step towards receiving the permission of the federal and regional supervisory agencies to use of the cooling pond of the 5th and 6th units of Kursk NPP.
Note
The water of cooling ponds is used in the electricity production process: it ensures normal work of an NPP’s heat exchange equipment and safety systems and has no negative effect on the environment.
The cooling pond-2 is designed to supply service water to the 5th and 6th units (the former is under construction, the latter is on paper). The pond will also be used in the work of pump storage plant to be built under the present federal programs. The total area of the cooling pond is 10 square kilometers and holds 50,000,000 cubic meters. The state ecological inspection has examined the project and has found out that it will have no negative effect on the environment and the population of the nearby area.
