30.05.2008 // Information Department of Leningrad NPP

Vice Speaker of State Duma Svetlana Zhurova and delegation of Rosatom will open the Carnival of Childhood in Sosnovy Bor

Vice Speaker of State Duma Svetlana Zhurova and a delegation of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation, led by the director for contacts with public organizations and regions Igor Konyshev, will take part in the 6th Carnival of Childhood in the satellite city of Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant, Sosnovy Bor (Leningrad region) to be conducted on June 1 2008 on the occasion of the Children’s Day.

Five groups — “Khmel” folk ensemble, “Serdechko” Puppet Theater, “Magic Lantern” center, “Critical Mass” Theater and “Gorodok” folk theater – will perform during the carnival. They will also take part in the contest of theaters of closed administrative territorial districts and NPP satellite cities organized by Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation for encouraging creative activities in the above areas.

Note

Since Apr 1 2002 Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant has been a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern.

The plant has four 1,000MW units with RBMK type reactors (graphite-moderated reactors). The lives of the 1st and 2nd units have been extended for 15 years. The lives of the 3rd and 4th units are supposed to be extended for 20 years.

In 2007 Leningrad NPP generated a total of 24.633bln KWh against 23.178bln KWh in 2006. The capacity factor made up 70.3% against 66.2% in 2006. In 2008 the plant is supposed to produce 29.4bln KWh.

The International Children’s Day (ICD) is celebrated in numerous countries, usually (but not always) on June 1 each year.

The ICD had its origin in Turkey in 1920 (April 23, 1920) and later in the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland in 1925. It is not clear as to why June 1 was chosen as the ICD: one theory has it that the Chinese consul-general in San Francisco (USA) gathered a number of Chinese orphans to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in 1925, which happened to be on June 1 that year, and also coincided with the conference in Geneva.

June 1 has since been observed as the ICD by numerous countries, especially by Communist countries; in the Western world the ICD is usually celebrated on other days of the year (if at all), and there is often little public awareness about these celebrations. (See the section on Germany below for further discussions.) Consequently there is sometimes a misperception that June 1 as the ICD was a Communist invention. Nonetheless, in recent years even some groups within the United States started observing the ICD on June 1.

Sosnovy Bor has 41 educational institutions (14 kindergartens, 10 secondary schools, 5 vocational schools, a polytechnic college, 5 branches and 2 representations of St.Petersbureg universities), 11 sports organization, 2 children and youth sports schools organizing over 200 sports events a year. Malakhit sports and culture complex houses an Olympic training center. The city has 11 municipal culture facilities and 160 art and craft clubs, associations and studios.
