The Volgodon NPP has no negative impact on the radiation and ecological situation in the nearby area
The analysis of the ecological situation and the population health in the 30-km zone of Volgodonsk NPP is over. It was held by independent experts on the initiative of the regional Permanent Commission for the VNPP Construction and Operation Control.
The objective of the analysis was to see the state of the neighboring ecological systems and the population after 5 years of the VNPP operation.
The specialists of the Nuclear Physics Laboratory of the Institute of Physics of Rostov State University, led by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Mikhail Davydov, have analyzed 150 samples of soil, earth and water plants and bottom sediments and water taken from the area near the dam reach of the Tsimlyanksy reservoir and from the water-cooling pond of the NPP.
The analysis has revealed no radioactive nuclides produced by the plant. This proves that the NPP has no negative impact on the radiation and ecological situation in the nearby area.
The analysis of the health of the population of the 30-km zone was carried out by the experts of the Institute of Biology of Rostov State University led by Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor tatyana Shkurat. The experts used new unique test-systems generally applied in our country and abroad.
In order to reveal the pathology of thyroid gland and early cancer, they examined over 2,000 people living near the NPP and, for comparison, in other areas of the Rostov region (Rostov-on-Don, Salsk, settlements of the Myasnikovsky, Chertkovsky and Remontnensky districts).
The analysis has shown that the health of the population of the 30-km zone is within norm and even better than in other areas of the Rostov region, which proves that the NPP poses no threat to the health of the local population.
The results of the analysis are quite important for the assessment of the 5-year operation of Volgodonsk NPP and for the plans to construct new units at the plant.
