Results of 3rd phase of stabilization measures at Chernobyl NPP submitted to Working Commission
On the occasion of the Day of Power Engineer the Russian-Ukrainian «Stabilization» consortium, whose leading structure is Atomstojeksport, has made one more present to Chernobyl NPP: it has submitted to the Working Commission a report on the results of the 3rd phase of stabilization measures carried out at the «Shelter» Unit.
The complex consisted of three measures. In Aug 2006 the consortium reinforced the northern buttress wall and the unit connecting it with the northern gate. In Nov 2006 it reinforced the southern gate. Effective technologies have allowed the consortium to save much money and to finish the work in time.
In 2006 the consortium also carried out the 1st and 2nd phases: it reinforced the western seat of the «Mammoth» beam and stabilized the frame and the deaerator.
The final measure was the shift of the load from the roof of the «Shelter» to external metal constructions. This work was finished on Dec 16 2006. The two beams of the «sarcophagus» roof have been reinforced. During a press-conference the Emergency Minister of Ukraine expressed satisfaction with the work at the Chernobyl NPP.
The «Stabilization» consortium comprises Atomstrojeksport and Ukrainian companies Yuzhteploenergomontazh, Atomenergostrojprojekt, Rovno NPP Construction Department.
The contract was signed in 2004 as a result of an international tender held in the framework of the SIP program — plan for turning the «Shelter» into an ecological safe system. The SIP is financed by the «Shelter» Fund, a structure administered by EBRD.
Atomstrojeksport is leading Russian organization implementing inter-governmental agreements on NPP construction abroad. Presently, it is the only world company building 5 NPP units at one and the same time in China, India and Iran.
In Oct 2006 Atomstrojeksport won a tender for building «Belene» NPP in Bulgaria.
