22.12.2006 // Information Department of Kalinin NPP/Press Service of Rosenergoatom
20th anniversary of 2nd unit of Kalinin NPP
The construction of the 2nd unit was started in Nov 1981. The unit was launched on Dec 11 1986. The Acceptance Commission officially accepted the facility on Dec 25 1986. Three months later, on Apr 3, the unit began working at planned capacity. This marked the completion of the construction of the first two units of the plant working on VVER-1000 reactors.
In the past 20 years the unit has generated 125.532bln KWh. Nuclear and radiation safety has been the priority of the unit throughout its operation. The production culture is constantly being raised, substantial investments are made in reconstruction and modernization.
A whole number of safety and efficiency raising measures have been taken at the unit in the last few years. The active zone switched to fuel assemblies of alternative construction. A new information and computation system, an Arkus frame control system, a containment rope tension indicator, an individual neutron irradiation dose meter and quick-detach heat insulator have been installed. The technical water regulators have been reconstructed, the separators replaced.
Congratulating the personnel of the plant on the jubilee KNPP Director Vasily Aksenov said: “Let me thank you all. 20 years have passed since the launch of the 2nd unit. The preceding Chenobyl accident made all of us reconsider our attitude to nuclear power engineering and realize the extent of responsibility for our each action. I am happy that most of the people who took part in the launch of the unit still work in our team. On the eve of the Day of Power Engineer I would like to wish all our veterans and newcomers health and confidence in the future and may our enterprise prosper.”
