28.12.2006 // PR Department of BNPP/ Press Service of Rosenergoatom

On Dec 28 Bilibino NPP was given license for operating its 4th unit till 2016

Deputy Director General of Rosenergoatom-Technical Director N. Sorokin, Head of the Central Inter-Regional Territorial District for Nuclear and Radioactive Security Control of Rostechnadzor V. Snigirev and Director of Moscow Center of WANO F. Tukhvetov handed the license and presented BNPP employees with awards.

Technical Director of Rosenergoatom N. Sorokin held a working conference at the plant. Director of BNPP M. Chudakov and Chief Engineer K. Ozerov made reports about the plant’s activities in 2006. The head of the Department on Capital Construction A. Zilper reported about construction and installation activities and problems at the plant.

«The results of the activities of the whole personnel of Bilibino NPP speak for themselves: the plant will work for many years more,» Chief Engineer Konstantin Ozerov said. «In 2006 the plant has fulfilled its plan for prolonging the service period of the 4th unit. We have carried out a number of measures to modernize the unit’s systems. BNPP is the first Russian NPP whose service period has been prolonged for 15 years. But this is not the end.»

Bilibino NPP was built for supplying electricity to gold recovery industry and heat to the population of the town of Bilibino, that’s why it’s future directly depends on the development of the whole industrial complex of Chukotka. In order to decide what we will do with the plant, we should have in hand a program for Chukotka Autonomous District development, but we don’t have it yet.

«The great attention Rosatom pays to Bilibino NPP gives us hope that the NPP will work for more than 15 years provided that the Chukotka Government effectively plans the development of the region and Chukenergo,» Ozerov said. «Unfortunately, to date they have not shown any serious intentions to develop Chukenergo and have not given constructive answers to Rosatom’s proposals: they just assure us of their friendship and love. At the same time, I would like to note that the governor of Chukotka Roman Abramovich has supported the policy of Rosenergoatom and this inspires hope for the plant’s economic development.»
