29.12.2006 // Public Information Center of Beloyarsk NPP/Press service of Rosenergoatom
A delegation of employees of MEXT and PESCO companies (Japan) visited Beloyarsk NPP on Dec 25, 2006
During the visit the sides discussed the next stage of the work for irradiating MOX-fuel assemblies at the plant’s BN-600 reactor. The Japanese delegates were satisfied with the results of the meeting.
Beloyarsk NPP is involved in international cooperation projects for developing new nuclear fuel. These projects are crucial for the future of Russia’s nuclear power industry as uranium-plutonium fuel will be used at the innovative BN-800 unit to be built at Beloyarks NPP in 2012.
Japan has specific plans for developing fast breeder power engineering, that’s why it is also interested in developing a new fuel basis in cooperation with Russia, who is the leader in fast breeder reactor operation.
In the future, commercial uranium-plutonium-powered fast breeder reactors will become the basis of closed nuclear fuel cycle. This will allow to substantially enlarge the fuel basis of the nuclear power sector, to minimize the issue of radioactive waste, to significantly reduce the demand for natural uranium extraction and to use the accumulated waste of slow reactors.
