Ecological clean-up action took place at Lake Pesvo-the cooling pond of Kalinin NPP on June 9 2007
The clean-up was part of the global clean water program. It has already become a tradition that every year in early June the Russian NPPs clean their cooling ponds. The clean-ups are carried out by volunteer divers.
The deputy director of KNPP Mikhail Zimin welcomed the participants in the action. He said: “This is the second time that we are holding such an action. Last year this action was coordinated by Rosatom managers. This time, we will do the clean-up on our own. Today, we are going to clean our cooling ponds. The shore of Lake Pesvo is a recreation zone and we have a lot of work here.”
But just three hours later the shore was already clean. One of the scuba divers said: “The water is clean, the weather is fine, we are in a good mood and will do our work well.”
Note:
Pesvo and Udomlia lakes are used by Kalinin NPP as cooling ponds. They are connected with a pipe that ensures water circulation. In order to avoid overheating of the lakes, the plant has built two water cooling towers and a system of canals. The lakes are rich in fish: they produce several dozens of tons of fish a year.
