Kalinin NPP launches underground wastewater disposal facility

Kalinin NPP is the first Russian NPP to have launched such a project. “Now the water we use for restoring the ion exchange capacity of the filters will no longer be sent back to the cooling ponds,” says the deputy head of the Chemical Department of KNPP Gennady Sizov.

The method of underground wastewater disposal helps to significantly reduce and even fully prevent ground water pollution. Special pressure wells send wastewater into soils that are not used for any other purposes. Before disposal wastewater is filtered.

The facility consists of 17 wells (5 1,300m deep pressure wells and 12 observation wells) and can serve for 30 years. Sizov says that this project is not only a technological improvement but also a way to protect nature. It will help to enhance the ecological safety of the plant and the whole region.
