Young employees of Russian NPPs are on an inter-regional Memory Watch

A group of young employees of Leningrad, Kursk, Kalinin, Novovoronezh, Volgodonsk, Balakovo, Kola and Smolensk NPPs went on an inter-regional Memory Watch near Novo-Petrovo, Kostyrev rural area, Smolensk region, on Aug 28 2007.

The author of this initiative is the Youth Organization of Smolensk NPP. The organizers are the Culture Department of the Administration of Desnogorsk and Smolensk NPP.

32 youths will go around Roslavl district of Smolensk region in search of the remains of soldiers killed there during WWII.

While opening the Memory Watch, the director of Smolensk NPP A.Petrov said: “The history of Smolensk region has both happy and sad pages. Thousands of soldiers were killed here in 1941. They fought for us, for our future, and our duty today is to bring them back from oblivion. We know that the war is not over until we find and bury the last fallen soldier. Today, our history is in our hands.”

The head of Kostyrev village Alexander Stepanischev told the youths that it was not the first search carried out in the territory of the village. “We have already found many fallen soldiers – and not only Russians. People of different nationalities from all the Soviet Union fought here. The war took the best. We would like to thank you for this initiative and we are ready to help you to find our heroes.”

On behalf of the search group, representative of Kalinin NPP Inna Gridnyova said: “Smolensk is the neighbor of Kalinin. We have studied the history of the war and we know the geography of the battles that took place here. We are glad that Rosenergoatom supported our initiative. We are here to perpetuate the names of those killed in the battlefields of the Great Patriotic War – they deserve it.”

The search will last till Sept 6. The found remains will be buried in the Field of Memory in Desnogorsk.
