Second day of emergency training at Leningrad NPP: experts are summing up preliminary results

20.09.2007 // Information Department of Leningrad NPP

As a result of complex emergency training at Leningrad NPP mass media have begun to actively discuss problems of nuclear and radiation safety

Today, Sept 20, is the second day of the complex emergency training at Leningrad NPP.

According to the scenario, the accident is being localized by the REA Emergency Response Group led by the technical director of Rosenergoatom Nikolay Sorokin.

The representative of the Emergency Ministry of Russia for Leningrad region and the mayor of Sosnovy Bor have reported on their actions.

Everybody is working according to the scenario, say the observers.

“Russian and international experts have pointed out the high safety of the Russian NPPs,” report analysts in their daily reviews.

“Despite the training, LNPP is operating according to the schedule. In fact, the emergency is staged on one of the plant’s two full-scale simulators. The simulators are absolute copies of the control boards and precisely imitate all technological processes. One more peculiarity of the scenario is that such a situation could not naturally happen in real life: episodes could take place separately but not all together. Besides, the organizers have set very tough requirements and deadlines. So, the trainees have much less time for solving the problems that they would have in real situation.

Note

Leningrad NPP is situated on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea 80 km west of St.Petersburg.

Since Apr 1 2002 Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant has been the branch of Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Russian State Concern for Production of Electric and Thermal Power at Nuclear Power Plants” (Rosenergoatom Concern).

The plant has four units with RBMK-1000 reactors with a total capacity of 4000 MW. It employs 5,977 people: 5,635 industrial employees and 342 non-industrial employees and pays them 26,695 RUR a month: 27,306 RUR to industrial personnel and 11,380 RUR to non-industrial personnel.
