Heads of Rosatomstroy and Siberian Chemical Plant visit thermal power plant in Seversk

27.09.2007 // PR Department of Rosatomstroy

On Sept 25 director general of Rosatomstroy and director of Siberian Chemical Plant inspected the course of reconstruction of thermal power plant in Seversk

They were satisfied with what they had seen: the city and industrial boilers of the TPP were 50% ready.

The reconstruction of the SCP’s TPPs is part of the Russian-US agreement for the elimination of weapons grade plutonium production and stipulates gradual construction of a technological basis for substituting capacities.

50% of the substituting capacities are to be launched by Dec 2007: the launch of turbine 10, the construction of boilers 21, 5 and 16, the first stage of the reconstruction of the city and industrial boilers, the construction of 3rd northern transit pipeline and the 50% construction of the makeup demineralizer system.

The full launch of the substituting capacities is scheduled for 2008: the reconstruction of boilers 10 and 18, the replacement of boiler 3 and turbine 13, the 100% construction of the makeup demineralizer and city and industrial boilers.

The full thermal capacity of the TPP is 1,750 Gcal/h (714 MW) (substituting capacity — 760 Gcal/h (235 MW)).

During the inspection the director general of Rosatomstroy Artyom Butov said: “The launch of boiler 21 and turbine 10 is near completion. This is a very important step towards your final goal: to stop the production of weapon-grade plutonium and to supply the residents of the region with heat and electricity. We hope that your next steps will be as successful.”

The reconstruction of the SCP’s TPP is a strategic project. It complies with all quality and safety standards. July 20–21 2007 Seversk marked the 4,000,000th accident-free hour under the project.

The project is financed by the US side. The total cost of the project is $285mln.

Note:

The reconstruction of the SCP’s TPP is part of Seversk Plutonium Production Elimination Project. The objective of that project is the refurbishment of the existing fossil fuel plant and the shutdown of the two remaining plutonium production reactors in Seversk by 2008.

The parties to the project are Rosatomstroy, Washington Group International Inc and Siberian Chemical Plant
